University women鈥檚 soccer national championships set at Acadia
The U Sports women鈥檚 soccer national championships return to 外流影片 in Wolfville, Nova Scotia from November 10-13, 2016 with a full slate of activities on and off the field.
Eight teams, including number-eight ranked Acadia, University of British Columbia (#1), Laval Rouge et Or (#2), University of Ontario Institute of Technology (#3), St. Francis Xavier (#4), Queen鈥檚 (#5), Trinity Western (#6) and Saskatchewan (#7) will vie for the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to U Sports鈥 women鈥檚 soccer champions. The tournament begins on Raymond Field at 12 p.m. AST on Thursday, November 10 and continues through to the championship match on Sunday, November 13 at 2:30 p.m. AST. Another tournament highlight will be the All-Canadian Gala on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Festival Theatre in Wolfville. Hosted by Ken Reid and Evanka Osmak of Sportsnet and presented by Maritime Travel and West Jet, the Gala will feature special guests and include the presentation of several key awards, including: the Chantal Navert Memorial Award (Player of the Year); Coach of the Year Award; Student-Athlete Community Service Award; and the R.W. Acadia鈥檚 Director of Athletics Kevin Dickie said, 鈥渨e are delighted to be hosting the CIS women鈥檚 soccer national championships. Acadia has a strong and storied tradition of athletic excellence in all our sporting disciplines, and this is particularly evident in our women鈥檚 soccer program. An estimated 5,600 visitors 鈥 including coaches, more than 200 players, 80 volunteers, 16 officials, 10 department support and Acadia staff, and hundreds of family members 鈥 will attend the five-day event. Accounting for a multiplier effect and some non-local sponsorship funds, it鈥檚 expected that the tournament will inject approximately $3 million into the local economy.

Former Acadia soccer coach, six-time AUAA coach of the year, CIAU coach of the year and Sports Hall of Fame member Laura Sanders is this year鈥檚 Honorary Chairperson. Acadia last hosted the CIS women's soccer championship in 2000 and did so prior in 1989, winning bronze. The Axewomen captured the CIAU women鈥檚 soccer title in 1990 with a 4-2 win on penalty kicks over UBC.
