Remembering Steve Pound: Acadia Legend, Champion, and Lifelong Educator
A native of Millinocket, Maine, Steve arrived in Wolfville in 1968 and quickly made his mark as a standout guard with the Axemen basketball team. Known for his unmatched scoring ability, court vision, and leadership, Steve helped lead Acadia to national prominence鈥攊ncluding the historic 1971 Canadian Intercollegiate Championship.
A three-time Maritime Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion, CIAU silver medalist, two-time All-Canadian, conference MVP, and Acadia鈥檚 Male Athlete of the Year (twice), he remains one of the most decorated athletes in Acadia鈥檚 history. In addition to his individual and team awards, Steve also finished his career as the program鈥檚 all-time leading scorer鈥攅clipsing the 2,000-point total.
Beyond his athletic brilliance, Steve was a dedicated educator and leader. After a successful teaching career in Quebec, he returned to Acadia in 1986 as Executive Director of the Associated Alumni. His passion for education continued with the completion of his PhD in 1995 and the receipt of the Distinguished Service Award from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions, Steve was inducted into the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame in 1997鈥攁 fitting tribute to a lifetime of excellence. In 2011, he was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame, followed by the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. Steve was also named honorary chair of the 2018 U SPORTS Men鈥檚 Basketball Final 8 hosted by Acadia and was a tireless advocate and supporter of Acadia Athletics.
Beyond the court and record books, Steve鈥檚 remarkable ability to turn chance meetings into meaningful relationships connected generations of Acadia alumni, student-athletes, staff, and fans by drawing on鈥攁nd tirelessly celebrating鈥攁 shared Acadia experience. His unmatched enthusiasm, spirit, and humour will be deeply missed, but Steve鈥檚 legacy lives on in those he inspired as a player, mentor, colleague, and friend. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Steve鈥檚 family, friends, teammates, and the entire Acadia community.
