Funds for the Food Cupboard Event Raises $2,000 In Support of the On-Campus Student-Run Foodbank

ASU, Chartwells, and Food Cupboard representatives gather to celebrate the fundraising achievement

Wolfville, NS, December 12, 2018 -- On Saturday, November 3rd Chartwells at 外流影片, the Acadia Students鈥 Union (ASU) and the ASU Food Cupboard held the first Funds for the Food Cupboard fundraising event, raising a total of $2,000 in support of the on-campus student-run foodbank, the Food Cupboard. Chartwells matched all funds raised.

"The Funds for the Food Cupboard event held at the Axe Bar and Grill was a great success,鈥 said Caitlin Sanderson, ASU Food Cupboard Coordinator. 鈥淭his event was not only about raising money but it also started the conversation of student food insecurity here at 外流影片. By holding and participating in events such as this one, we can work together to build and support a community that is food secure.鈥

As part of Chartwells鈥 WE Partnership, a unique opportunity to attend WE Day Ottawa was offered as grand prize for the fundraiser. The trip for two was won by Kasey Newell, a 4th year student at 外流影片. Kasey had attended WE Day Halifax when she was in high school and was well acquainted with WE鈥檚 focus on food security in developing countries. When asked about winning the WE Day Ottawa experience she said, 鈥淚 was so happy and grateful to be the winner of this experience! I was in shock and couldn鈥檛 believe that I had won.鈥 Kasey and a friend received travel, accommodations as well as $500 spending money.

鈥淚n 2015, Dr. Lesley Frank a professor at 外流影片 conducted research on the prevalence of food insecurity within the student population. She concluded that approximately 38% of Acadia students felt some level of food insecurity within that year,鈥 said Caitlin. George Philp, President of the Acadia Students鈥 Union, stated 鈥淭he ASU is so happy to work with all partners on campus, including Chartwells, to enhance student supports on campus, including the ASU Food Cupboard. We thank Chartwells for their continued support for Acadia Students.鈥

As part of their ongoing support, beginning January 7th, 2019, Chartwells will be launching Coffee for a Cause days which will occur once a month to raise money for social causes on campus and in the Wolfville community. During these specific days a portion of the coffee sales on campus will be donated back to organizations such as the Food Cupboard and the Acadia S.M.I.L.E. program. for further details.
