Acadia mourns The Honourable Dr. Kelvin K. Ogilvie

Brilliant scientist, visionary leader, and proud Acadia alumnus (鈥63, 鈥64, 鈥83), The Honourable Dr. Kelvin K. Ogilvie, C.M., Ph.D.,D.Sc., F.C.I.C., HCol., Senator(r) passed away on July 15, 2025. His impact on our university, our country, and the global scientific community is immeasurable.

鈥淲e will remember Dr. Ogilvie not only for his extraordinary accomplishments, but also for his belief in the power of education, research, and ideas to shape a better world. His legacy is felt every day on our campus, in the lives of our students and faculty, and in the broader communities he served,鈥 says University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jeff Hennessy.

As President and Vice-Chancellor from 1993 to 2003, Dr. Ogilvie led Acadia through a transformative decade with the creation of the Acadia Advantage, which was recognized by the Smithsonian Institution for its pioneering approach, now celebrating its 25th anniversary. This forward thinking allowed faculty and staff access to the information they needed to challenge themselves in this world and positioned Acadia at the forefront of 21st century education.

Dr. Ogilvie鈥檚 legacy includes his key role in the establishment of the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre and Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens in partnership with Chancellor Emeritus Arthur L. Irving (鈥52, 鈥03) and family.

As a renowned scientist and inventor, Dr. Ogilvie鈥檚 breakthroughs in biotechnology, including the development of the chemistry of the 鈥淕ene Machine,鈥 and invention of the antiviral drug Ganciclovir, have impacted countless lives. His appointments to the Order of Canada, the Canadian Senate, and numerous scientific honours speak to his lifelong commitment to public service and innovation.
